Title: Don’t Fence Me In
Date: 2008
Medium: mixed media on canvas
Dimensions: diptych: each panel 60cms by 182 cms by 4cms

My walks in nature and my inner life inform my work. I begin my paintings gesturally, instinctively, responding to the varied landscapes I have absorbed and the feelings generated by them. I work quickly letting my instincts guide me, my memory of my time in nature entering the dance with my state of mind. After these initial stream of consciousness marks, I stop often to see the work evolving and proceed in a deliberate controlled manner changing a line here and there, adding or subtracting colour. I consciously strive for a strong composition and a harmonious relationship among all the elements. In the process, the landscape becomes a new “landscape”, a melding of nature as it presents itself and the nature that I carry within myself. I use collage; fragments of my old drawings, my discarded intaglio prints, or photos I have taken as the starting point for my paintings.

pencil and acrylic on prepared board

I recently traveled from London to Prague and back by bus. I was struck dumb by the beauty of the landscape, particularly the countryside: mist over green fields at sunrise; sheep, cows and horses at pasture; little towns and church steeples. I wondered about why so many of us choose to live in cities; I didn’t come up with an answer. For the 2009 Desmond Juried Art Exhibition and Sale, I meditated on the spread of urban centres and the changing rural landscape here and abroad. Using internet-sourced images (GOOGLE search terms: cityscape, countryside) and with a nod to Ambrogio Lorenzetti’s 1338-1340 frescoes in Siena’s Palazzo Pubblico, the small painting And They Walked in Fields of Gold resulted.

Jenni-Raie Merritt – The Brother Barn

Jenni-Raie Merritt - The Brother Barn

Jenni-Raie Merritt, BSW, RSW

The Brother Barn stands on my family farm, rusted and scorched by the summer sun. It was built many years ago by my Dad and his two brothers. Of the three, only one remains. Perhaps the barn stands as a memorial to their sweat and determination. Or perhaps it’s just a metal shed. (Photo taken September 11, 2008).
